POET

The Psychology of Everyday Things

From my understanding of the reading, POET is almost the subconscious. We take the design of objects for granted. This reading forced me to actually think about the thought process that goes into producing the various objects we use everyday.

A POET experience that came to mind is the lock to gain access to the department I work in. When I first started working at the Salvation Army, they supplied me with instructions to open the door locks. The first door is four digits with a star. The second door has a keypad with six numbers.  The first row is 123 and the second row is 456. The problem is that the numbers 3 and 5 have worn out because of use. Because the keypad was designed in a logical number sequence of left to right and top to bottom the 3 and 5 missing does not cause a problem at all. This is a very simple example of POET.
